Term 3:Week 4 Thursday, Aug 19 2010

This week has been quite a busy week with Student led conferences,speeches, and finishing discussion arguments. Maths and english were just minor subjects this week, although we still did have a lot of maths, and not much english work. In maths this week I have learned how to use capacity to solve problems. Capacity is the amount of liquid an object can hold. To solve capacity problems I followed this table:

mL=Millimetre/L=Litre/KL=1000L/ML=MegaLitre/Cm3=Centimetre Cubed

1L=1000mL         1KL=1000L      1ML=1000KL     1L=1000cm3     1ML=1 000 000L

I did my speech on Monday. For some reason my hands were shaking but I wasn’t really scared because I am quite a confident public speaker. I didn’t get into the finals, but that was okay because I didn’t want to get into the finals anyway.

My student led conference was okay and I got a Playstation game. It is called Fallout Brotherhood of Steel.

Science Fair Tuesday, Jun 15 2010

For this years Science Fair  I did ”Bouncing Balls”. My question was ” What is the relationship between a balls air pressure and its bounce height”. My hypothesis was I thought that the ball with the highest air pressure would bounce the highest.In the end I was right and the ball with the most air pressure in it came first.My equipment was a 12 volt air compressor, A standard basket ball, a measuring tape, duck tape,and a video camera.I decided to test 8, 9,and 10 Psi because if I pumped the ball up any more it would almost certainly pop during the tests and I only had one ball. On Tuesday the 15th of June the judging started and we were called over by class to set up our Science Fair boards.

Term 2:Week 6 Monday, May 31 2010

This week in English I have been learning how to write reports using only notes that I have written and topic sentences. A topic sentence is a sentence that explains what the paragraph is about.I have also written a report on elephants, and my second report is about Cheetahs.
In maths I have learned how to divide decimals. First you multiply the decimal number by 10. Example:
3.2=32
32 Divided 4=8
Then you change back into a decimal
8=0.8
My goal for next week is to find the book ”Class A” in the ”Cherub” Series.
I can complete this by looking at the Te Awamutu Library.

Secrets Of the Jedi

Secrets of the Jedi is about a boy named Taleson Fry who intercepts a message from a group of bounty hunters.He over hears them talking about an assassination of twenty planetary leaders in the galactic senate.

Two Jedi masters and their padawans, travelled to Taleson Fry, or Taly’s home planet of Cirrus, in order to provide protection for Taleson Fry and his family on their way to Corruscant, so Taly can testify before the galactic senate.

As they are coming out of the planets upper atmosphere, one of the bounty hunters ships attacks them, leaving there ship crippled in such a way that they had to land on a planet called Quadrant Seven.

Obi-Wan,Siri Tachi, and Taly intercept a coded message indicating that there is a freighter that comes only once a month, arriving in five days.On the day that the freighter arrives, the group try to sneak aboard the freighter. At the last minute before take off, they manage to get the boading ramp down using an external control panel.

Meanwhile, The Jedi masters, Qui-Gon, and Adi, manage to hitch a ride with the bounty hunters. The Jedi overhear that the mass assassination will be on the high security planet Rondai 2.

Both the Jedi masters and their padawans make it to the planet Rondai 2, in time to put an end to the bounty hunters rampage. In revenge, the bounty hunter Magnus, the one who shot them down over Quadrant Seven, kills Taly’s parents.

Twenty years later, Taly is all grow up, and owns his own security based business.The Jedi masters Qui-Gon, and Adi have both passed on and their padawans have filled their place, along with Anakin Skywalker, and his secret wife, Padme Amidala. Siri and Obi-Wan are surprised to hear from Taly, who is offering his code breaker to them,for a certain price.When the Jedi have finished negotiating with Taly, they take the code breaker to the secret Republic base on Azure, only to find the Separatists have planted a tracking device in the code breaker, and are heading right for them. As the battle rages on, Siri Tachi, who has a romantic relationship with Obi-Wan, is killed by Magnus, the bounty hunter who planted the tracking device in the code breaker. Obi-wan nearly kills Magnus, but turns away just as he raising his lightsaber.

This book has a lot of things about why the Jedi forbid close relationships, like when Obi-Wan nearly kills Magnus but turns away as he was taught in the Jedi order not to kill for revenge.I think this book should get a 7/10 because it is a bit mushy at the start, but it makes up for it at the end.

Term 2: Week 5 Friday, May 21 2010

This week I have learned strategies for adding and subtracting decimals.To add a decimal you change the decimals into hundredths or tens, depending on the decimal then you add them together. Example: 5.3+1.03=
5.30+1+0.03
Which will equal 6.33
And for subtracting decimals you do make it a tidy number and then add-on what you added on to make it a tidy number. Example: 5.7-1.92=
5.70-2.00+0.0.08
Which will equal 3.78.
My goal for this week is to get better at punctuating.

Term 2:Week 4 Monday, May 17 2010

This Week, The Band Went To Totara Springs.
At least two-thirds of the class were at band camp. In maths I learned how to order decimals, how to add three digit numbers, subtract three digit numbers, and how to multiply three digit numbers, and they all had to use algorithms.

My goal this week is to finnish all my work

Term 2:Week 2 Thursday, Apr 29 2010

Last week I went on camp to camp Adair, up by Auckland. I had lots of fun there. I learned how to build a make shift bridge across a ditch, and how to cook a pancake on a camp burner. My Favourite parts were the Burma trail, and camp cooking.

Now back to this week.

I have learned what the scientific method is.

My First Book Review Wednesday, Mar 31 2010

Title: Star Wars Last of the Jedi Dark Warning
Author: Jude Watson
Genre: Sci-Fi
Publisher: Scholastic
Number of Pages: 155
Number of Chapters: 20
Duration to Read: 4 Days

This is the second of 10 books in the “Last of the Jedi” series. It is set between “Revenge of the Sith” and “The New Hope.”

This continues to be a great series since it is set in one of the most interesting periods in the star wars timeline that has yet to be thoroughly covered. As you might expect, there are a few Jedi remaining who have survived the execution of Order 66. The previous book brought Ferus Olin back into the spotlight, while this book also brings an unlikely hero back from the clone wars, Obi-Wan Kanobi. It’s good to see that some of them survived, but it’s also easy to see why Yoda wouldn’t be calling them their last hope as there is an inevitable rebellion ahead. This book features a lot of memorable encounters in it.

It starts out with a battle between Boba Fett and Obi-Wan. Also seen is Obi-Wan returning to Polis Massa to try and cover the tracks of Yoda, Bail, and the twins at the close of Revenge of the Sith. And as the cover shows, there’s a rematch between Ferus and his Padawan nemesis Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader. Ferus also gets a quick glimpse at what’s left of the Jedi Temple after the massacre from the film. Dark Warning also features more interaction between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn. These are just the kinds of situations that you would want to see in a Star Wars book.

My only complaint is that Obi-Wan Kanobi seems to be a little too out in the open when he’s supposedly trying to hide his identity. He openly battles Boba Fett in one scene, travels across the galaxy in others, and generally doesn’t lay low, which doesn’t really fit in with the storyline.

I would personally rate this book 8.5/10 because it does have a good storyline and I do enjoy reading it but there are some parts which drag on too much.

Term 1:Week 8 Monday, Mar 29 2010

This week in maths I have learned how to multiply colossal sums. For example: 321 multiplied by 48. You do 321 multiplied by 8, and then you do 321 multiplied by 40. Then after you have done that you add the two sums together.I have almost mastered integers, and I have finished all my work for that part of maths. We also so had our second food technology session, and I got to make jacket potatoes.

Goal for next week:

To finish my book review on time.
I can do this by managing my time better.

Term 1: Week 7 Thursday, Mar 18 2010

This week in english I have learned how to do anagrams and how to identify differences in categories, for example in this list one place is different
Antarctica
Australia
Switzerland
Antarctica would be the different one because it is the only place that isn’t owned by a nation.
In maths I am learning how to subtract huge numbers like 19867-8765.

My goal next week is to finish all my english work on time and to an acceptable standard.
I can do this by managing my time better
